The Surf

The Big Island has some great surf, warm water, all in striking distance. At Kona Sugar Shack you are a stones through from three nice surf spots. Magics, Lymans, Kahaluu, and Banyans. All of these spots break differently depending on the season, but there is almost always something to surf. Kahaluu being the most consistent on this side of the island. Lymans breaks best in the summer, Pine trees works in the winter and the summer. Check below for more details on the surf spots or read
about the Top 5 Surf Spots around Kona.
See All the surf spots
Magics
Good shorebreak nice tubes, when it gets big it breaks out by the point for a good left, there is also a wedge on the inside that provides a long left.
Kahaluu
Nice rights and lefts, the inside is great for learning and beginners. The outside has some shifting peaks and is really fun. Excellent for both snorkeling and surfing. Kahaluu is nifty, with three sections of reef with lagoons in between.  Wear booties if you plan on touching the bottom, lots of urchins here and everywhere along the cost line.
Banyans
Banyans is the locals favourite, requiring patience, skill and luck in order to snag one of the hollow rights in winter NW’ers and shorter lefts in summer souths. NE winds are dead offshore and low tide makes the water depth close to critical. Lefts have a paddling channel amongst the coral heads - the rights don't. This is a local heavy spot so wait your turn and you might get some left overs.
LYMANS
Located on the West shore in between Magic Sands and Kahaluu Beach Park. Here, you’ll find left breaking waves with swells from the northwest and southwest and winds from the east and southeast. Summer is when surfers most often visit Lymans. Bring your shortboard, longboard, funboards or stand-up paddle board. It’s another local spot but worthwhile for all skill levels. The reef and coral bottom are sharp, as are most of the other surf spots throughout the island.
Pine Trees
A cool, remote spot that is perfect for beginners, Pine Trees is located near the airport north. Take Highway 19 and turn left when you see signs for the Natural Energy Lab. You’ll need a 4WD to get to Pine Trees. Both summer and winter are equally good surf seasons here, with wind directions flowing from the east. The swells are from the northwest, west and southwest, with a right reef break. Shortboards, longboards, funboards and stand-up paddle boards are all workable for a grand surf experience. Pine Trees has a reef and coral bottom, as do many of the Big Island surf spots. Weekends are a busy time and locals flock to this spot.
Kawaihae Breakwater
The Kona Coast boasts the best conditions with offshore trades and a S to N swell window. Kawaihae Harbor is the island’s official tidal measurement location and hosts several beginner friendly reefs next to the breakwater. Plenty of rights in NW swells, spied by a web-cam plus a good, rolling left into the boat channel.
Mile Markers
There are some hidden gems along the Kona Coastline named after mile markers. Search around and you will find some quality reefs.
HAUNA POINT
Big open white sand beach. Perfect for beach days and swimming with the family. Also is a decent beach break for body surfing and body boarding.
Break descriptions partly from Hawaiian Beach Rentals and Magicseaweed.

Recommendations from Tara
at Kona Sugar Shack

Definitely take advantage of the crystal clear waters if you scuba or snorkel. Almost every beach in Kona is great for each but there are a handful that are better than others. The cove across the street at Magic Sands Beach and the southern reef at Kahalu'u Beach are two of my very favorites on the entire island.

Also see coffee country as Kona is home to the only place in the united states with a rich and fascinating history of coffee and agricultural culture. It's also really something to see all the hard work that goes into every step making a cup of coffee.  I never looked at a 'simple' cup of coffee the same!

Just north of the airport is a Petroglyph park that is also a historically rich and curious site to see.

Not too far from Kona [ 2 hours south ] is the Volcanoes National Park and the Kilauea Iki Crater trail was life altering in its beauty and epic experience.

As was the experience of seeing what looked like a fake planetarium looking into the night skies from Mauna Kea, the mountain in Waimea - about 1 hour or so north - a memory I will neve forget.  It also snows there almost annually and has had blizzards!
